Keep crosshair, update legend not in chart and hide tooltip

I'm looking into ways to keep the crosshair functionality, but instead of showing the tooltip I want to update a custom chart legend that I have that exists outside of the stock chart. This is similar to how Google finance works here => http://www.google.com/finance?q=aapl+pcu+g.

There doesn't seem to be an even that I could tie into to do this, or have I just missed it?

Sure, it's quite simple. You have to do everything in tooltip formatter (update the value of that legend) and then formatter should return false to hide the tooltip, see: http://jsfiddle.net/RNZXt/
